The Unseen Bottleneck in XR: Why Mass Adoption Isn't About Hardware

This week on The Immergence Show, we were thrilled to host Ben Erwin, President of the Academy of Immersive Arts and Sciences and creator of The Polys Awards. They are a recognized voice in spatial computing and the immersive web, advocating passionately for open systems, interoperability, and standards-based distribution.

Mr. Erwin shared profound insights into what he argues is the true bottleneck holding back spatial computing: distribution, openness, and content longevity. He posits that the industry's focus on hardware is misplaced, and the key to mass adoption lies in solving for accessible, non-proprietary content delivery. This article distills the key educational takeaways and pivotal insights from our discussion.

While we explore the core concepts here, to truly grasp the depth of Mr. Erwin's vision, including his unmissable predictions for how the AI innovation curve will drastically accelerate the "Holodeck" timeline, the full video interview is a must-watch.

The Real Bottleneck: Vendor Control, Not Hardware

While industry and consumers remain fixated on the physics of light, heat, weight, and power for wearable glasses, Mr. Erwin argues that the hardware will solve itself over the next three to seven years, aided by exponential AI innovation. The greater, "unseen" problem is how vendors control distribution and refuse to cooperate on open standards. This lack of interoperability forces consumers into proprietary ecosystems, severely limiting the content's reach and lifespan.

Mr. Erwin draws powerful historical analogies, reminding us of the destructive competition cycles seen with VHS vs. Beta and HD DVD vs. Blu-ray. He emphasizes that destructive competition, where players refuse to take consumer convenience or price point into consideration, is everything when trying to scale a new technology.

Key Insight: "What is really broken is how the vendors intend to sort of control that distribution and are not looking to cooperate with each other."

Championing Open Standards and Distribution Technology

For immersive content to endure and remain accessible to future generations, it must be built on open, extensible specifications. Mr. Erwin highlighted that the current effort to create 3D experiences is an order of magnitude more sophisticated than 2D, making the lack of reliable, standardized distribution channels an even greater hurdle.

A critical technical solution is Level of Detail (LOD) Streaming, which loads data only for what the user is facing and increases focus as they move closer to objects. This efficiency is essential to avoid network overhead and wasteful downloading of massive 3D data. He sees formats like glTF and the work of the Alliance for OpenUSD (in which Apple is a founding member) as pivotal to solving this streaming challenge. This technical focus on efficient delivery is a foundation for the immersive content ecosystem.

Key Insight: "Level of Detail streaming is the future of XR delivery, because downloading everything that you need is, first of all, wasteful, and second of all, it is just going to create a network overhead."

The Reputation Challenge: Decoupling XR from the Hype

Mr. Erwin expressed frustration with the conflation of the immersive web (XR) with the speculative cycles of cryptocurrency and NFTs. The initial Metaverse hype cycle was derailed by speculative scams and false valuations tied to digital tokens, which severely "soured people on the term Metaverse."

He asserts that while blockchain technology is crucial for attribution and authenticity—such as securing school credits or diplomas—it must be completely decoupled from speculative, volatile coins. The future of the immersive web requires critical thinking to separate the genuine innovation trigger from the peak of inflated expectations.

Key Insight: "Blockchain as a technology has a very important role to play in attribution and authenticity... but it needs to be completely decoupled from the rise and fall of falsely valued coins."

A Bold Vision: Creating a "PBS for the Immersive Age"

Arguing that the current immersive landscape is disproportionately focused on games (around 90%), with a sad lack of imagination for other forms of content, Mr. Erwin proposes a revolutionary solution: a non-profit, global public media model for immersive content.

Inspired by the legacy of public broadcasting—which nurtured the American intellect with nutritious content like Sesame Street and The NewsHour—the Academy of Immersive Arts and Sciences was founded with a vision to create this ecosystem. The goal is to provide high-quality, nourishing content across education, art, culture, and science for a global constituency, not just a national one. This mission is driven by the pillars of Educate, Inspire, and Recognize, with The Polys Awards serving as the recognition pillar to spotlight pioneering creators.

Key Insight: "What we need are Sesame Street and The NewsHour and things like PBS. Like an entire generation grew up with public broadcasting, and it nurtured the American intellect."

Looking Ahead: Mr. Erwin's Vision for Immersive Development

Mr. Erwin is focused on consumer mass adoption, not enterprise, because he wants the human race to have access to this technology with as little friction and cost as possible, creating shared memories together. His vision hinges on the rapid growth of the builder community.

He points out that the number of people building in 3D is a small fraction of 2D developers. To achieve "holodecks," the industry needs legions of 3D creators—the "XR Master Builder." He remains confident in a rapid acceleration of innovation driven by AI, which will act as a tool for engineers to solve physics and hardware problems faster than ever before. For Mr. Erwin's full, unfiltered predictions on where volumetric display technology and the innovation curve are heading—including some truly eye-opening scenarios discussed off-the-cuff—the complete Immergence Show episode is unmissable.
